At Google’s big hardware event yesterday in San Francisco, the company announced Google WiFi. This is a new router from Google that is set to make the internet work better with the devices that are actually using the internet. It was also created as a router that doesn’t look ugly, and can sit nicely on a bookshelf in the living room or anywhere else in your home. Google WiFi sports a number of features that the OnHub router also sports, which led many current OnHub users to wonder whether or not their hardware was being left in the dust, and it appears that they aren’t.
While Google WiFi does have a ton of OnHub’s features, it does also have a few that aren’t on the OnHub just yet. And speaking with one of Google’s representatives at their event, Google WiFi was totally rebuilt from the ground up, versus taking OnHub and making it better. They also noted that when the Google WiFi launches, OnHub would get an update with all of the features that Google WiFi has. On top of that, Google WiFi and OnHub will work together. So if you are using OnHub in an office building or a larger home, you may have some dead spots. Add in a Google WiFi or two, and you will have even better coverage throughout your home. So it’s a great idea to have these two products work together, instead of one replacing the other.
Google did announce pricing for Google WiFi, which is slated at $129 or you can pick up a pack of three for $299. This is especially useful for larger homes. The new router will be available for pre-order next month, with the units beginning to ship in December. It’s their second attempt at creating a router and this time around, there were no mentions of any partners building it for them. Whereas the OnHub was built by either TP-LINK or ASUS depending on the model you picked up. And that goes right along with the “Made By Google” slogan that they used for all the hardware announced at their event on Tuesday.
