Although many people will be focusing on the Pixel and Pixel XL as the big devices of the day following Google’s announcement from this morning’s event, another product worth paying attention to is the recently rumored and now made official Google Wifi, which Google has now confirmed will be hitting the U.S. market at a price of $129 when it goes up for pre-order next month in November. As with the rest of the products that Google has announced today such as the Chromecast Ultra, Google Wi-Fi will be available for consumers to purchase through the Google Store website, and will be available at various other retailers, such as Amazon and likely local retailers like Best Buy and Walmart.
Google Wifi, which was initially described as a mesh technology when it was rumored before the announcement, is all about helping owners fill the weak spots in the home Wi-Fi network. The device is built as a modular base, allowing users to compile more than a single Google Wifi unit together as needed to ensure that every inch of the home is covered with a Wi-Fi signal. Having said that, the earlier mentioned price of $129 will be the cost of single modular base unit for Google Wifi and if consumers need more than one unit, it will come at an additional cost. Google have set it up to where you will be able to buy a three-pack of the Google Wifi routers for a price of $299, and although pre-orders start in November, the devices will ship in December.
Each Google Wifi unit will act as a trusted device to keep the security of the home Wi-Fi network intact, and whether you have one or three Google Wifi will take the place of an existing router so another is not needed. While the main goal of Google Wifi is to help strengthen the Wi-Fi signal around the home by boosting any weak spots that may be there, it will also have compatibility with things like automatic functions, and the ability to set up scheduling. Google notes that Google Wifi also supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, and it supports AC1200 wireless speeds which means that users should be able to receive and rely a consistently fast network. The Google Wifi routers will also be manageable through their own Google Wi-Fi application that will be available through the Play Store.
