For the past several weeks an upcoming Samsung Chromebook stole the spotlight on several occasions and for good reasons. Codenamed “Kevin”, the so-called Samsung Chromebook Pro is supposed to be the first of its kind to offer stylus support, but apparently, it won’t be the only device in the series. There have also been reports of a lower-end variant in the works, codenamed “Gru”, and now to draw the attention of Chromebook enthusiasts towards Samsung even further, a third Samsung Chromebook appears to be in development under the codename “Caroline”, boasting a higher-end silicon.
According to a recent report from Chrome Unboxed, Samsung appears to be developing a third Chromebook boasting stylus support. The device is identified by the codename “Caroline”, and although there aren’t many details regarding its hardware specifications, the source is confident that the product will take the form of a Chromebook powered by a Skylake-based Intel processor. Furthermore, the device appears to borrow a convertible form factor – not unlike the Samsung Chromebook Pro – and seems to be coupled with a stylus which has been mentioned in one of the recent commits on Chromium. In fact, one of the commits for the “Caroline” stylus has been submitted by an author using a Samsung email address, and although this doesn’t necessarily confirm that Caroline is a Samsung device, it certainly lends more weight to this possibility. After all, a fairly large number of commits have been submitted by Samsung employees for the Chromebook Pro in the past, and as far as we are aware, Samsung only builds styluses for its own devices and doesn’t supply the technology to other manufacturers.
It’s worth reemphasizing that the mysterious Caroline Chromebook should technically be more powerful than the Samsung Chromebook Pro given the use of Skylake architecture. As a reminder, the Samsung Chromebook Pro uses a six-core ARM-based processor featuring two Cortex-A72 cores along with four Cortex-A53 cores, Intel HD graphics, and 4GB of RAM. However, the Samsung Chromebook Pro is expected to become the first notebook powered by Chrome OS to take advantage of stylus support, and as such, it’s possible that the mysterious Caroline Chromebook will be reserved for a later release.
