This year, we haven’t seen a slew of new smartwatches launching. This could be due to the fact that Google has a huge update coming to Android Wear in early 2017. But it could also be due to the fact that smartwatches aren’t selling as well as many manufacturers had thought they would. 2016 has been more about the traditional watchmakers producing their own smartwatches on Google’s platform. Fossil, TAG Heuer, Michael Kors and now Nixon, have all launched their own Android Wear-powered smartwatches this year, with Nixon being the latest to join the fray.
The Nixon Mission is the latest Android Wear smartwatch to join the family, and it’s now available on Amazon, starting at $400. This is one of many smartwatches that are running on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 2100 Wear chipset. This chipset is smaller and more efficient than the Snapdragon 400 that most smartwatches had been using. On top of that, it is also made specifically for wearables like the Nixon Mission, which leads to even better performance, something that is definitely nice on smartwatch. This smartwatch does run on Android Wear, there’s no word on whether it will see the update to Android Wear 2.0, but it is pretty likely. It does also have Google Fit included, so that you are able to track all of your activity throughout the day, track your runs and so much more.
Nixon is offering the Mission in black, grey and orange colors. It is also water resistant for up to 100 meters (or 330 feet), which means it’ll be great for swimming, but it won’t track your swimming in Google Fit, unfortunately. Currently the only wearable that can track your swimming is the new Fitbit Flex 2. We’re also looking at a 1.39-inch 400×400 resolution display with 4GB of storage included and 512MB of RAM. That’s pretty much the standard specs for a smartwatch these days, especially when it comes to Android Wear. Surprisingly, Nixon did ditch the “flat tire” look, but it does have a larger bezel than most of the other smartwatches out there today.
