Given the series of unfortunate events which led to discontinuation of Galaxy Note 7, Samsung’s left with only two major flagships in 2016 – Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. That’s all the more reason for the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world to keep those two devices updated, i.e. keep existing customers happy. As it turns out, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have just received one such update. The patch which Samsung just pushed out upgrades the phones’ Always On Display which now boasts some new interesting features.
More specifically, the 1.4.02 update introduces a new calendar which looks pretty sleek and is more attractive than its predecessors. Unfortunately for people who won’t agree with that assessment, the new calendar replaces the previous two variants featured in the earlier versions of the Always On Display software. On the bright side, the update adds a variety of new customization options to this functionality. For starters, any image can now be picked as the Always On Display background. To do that, simply navigate to the AOD clock settings where the option to set a new background image is located. Speaking of clock settings, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge Always On Display now also boasts another clock design which supports custom text signatures. In other words, you can write anything you want to display below your AOD clock. This feature also supports multiple fonts though the selection isn’t too rich at the moment.
In addition to that, the AOD app now also sports support for music players so your screen can display any track that’s currently playing if you want it to. While Samsung hasn’t stated that specifically, this feature seemingly supports pretty much every music app out there which is an update over the previous functionality introduced in August. Always On Display has also undergone some performance optimizations and developers are claiming that the app should now use less than 1% of battery per hour. Naturally, that consumption level could vary a bit depending on the exact content you choose to display. All in all, this is a pretty significant update which leaves little to be desired and it’s great that Samsung is still regularly maintaining of the best Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge features.
