The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has caused a huge fracas in the short time it has been available for purchase, with multiple new and purportedly “safe” units catching on fire over the weekend. This comes after Samsung recalled the device about a month ago, for the same reason, and replaced most of the affected units. Due to that, Samsung has announced that it has permanently stopped the sale of its flagship phablet, and is currently urging all Galaxy Note 7 owners, to return the device to their respective point of purchase for a refund, or an exchange for a different device. Samsung is also sending out special “Return Kits” to Galaxy Note 7 owners, though it is unknown whether all customers will receive it.
Samsung has sent such a kit to XDA Developers at their office, even though they have already returned their Galaxy Note 7. The Return Kit comes with multiple boxes, and one of the boxes is thermally insulated for the device, probably to contain a fire if a Galaxy Note 7 unit catches on fire during transport. The box is specifically made to contain defective lithium ion batteries, which is the type of battery widely used in smartphones these days. Safety gloves are also included in the package, as Samsung mentions that some individuals may be sensitive to the ceramic fiber which lines the boxes and should use the gloves. It is also clearly written on the outer part of the box that the package should only be transported by ground, and not by air.
On top of that, XDA Developers has posted a video on YouTube, detailing the Return Kit, as well as the instructions which come in the box. According to the instructions, the Galaxy Note 7 must be placed in the static shielding bag which is included in the kit, and then it has to be placed inside an OEM replacement box which is similar in size to the retail packaging. Next, place the aforementioned box into a larger box, and finally, place it into the thermally insulated packaging, seal it up, and send the entire package on its way, by ground transport of course.
