There are a handful of different platforms out there for sharing content with a social network of users, and one of those, Vine, quickly became a popular choice among users and has seemingly been that way for the last few years. Today, though, it’s been announced that Twitter will be taking Vine offline in the near future. To be clear, it’s only going to be discontinuing the mobile application to begin with, so users will still be able to go the Vine website and the looping video clips will still be viewable by anyone who wishes to take a look at them.
How long the Vine website will be accessible wasn’t mentioned, or if they’ll eventually take it down, but for now it will still be open to creators and other users, as Vine says they value the vines that have been created and they want to keep them up and available to watch because they feel it’s important to do so. Vine makes it clear that as of right now, users are able to continue using the Vine app and service to create new content, but this post serves as a way to alert users that the app won’t be around forever and that posting new content won’t be an option for long, giving them time to find a new platform to deliver the same type of content before the Vine app is taken down.
Vine doesn’t state when exactly the mobile app will be taken offline, just that it would be in the coming months. This means that it’s possible that the app could disappear from app stores before the end of the year or it could stretch into 2017. In either case, it might benefit users to start looking at other apps now so they’re prepared to make the jump when the time comes. Neither Twitter nor the Vine team have mentioned any details about why the Vine mobile app is being discontinued, but Vine has been having struggles with keeping users, and they have had a couple of high-level executives leave the company so it’s possible that has some connection. Vine did state that they will be sharing more details about the situation via their blog and through their Twitter account in the near future. They also mention that users shouldn’t be surprised by any changes as they will be notifying existing users about them from within the app.
