Dell’s 13-inch Chromebook is one of the more popular Chromebooks out there, and it seems that it’s next in line to get Android app and Google Play support. Unlike other Chromebooks that are getting support in their Beta channels, however, enabling the feature on the Dell Chromebook 13 will require a few somewhat more technical steps beyond simply flipping over to the beta channel. This procedure is not for the faint of heart, or those without a reliable backup of any data on the device, as well as a restore USB key, which can be created via “chrome://imageburner”. If you’d like to make the leap, crack open a terminal window and read on below.
First off, if you haven’t already, flip over to the Beta channel. To do this, go into your Chromebook’s settings, then go to About Chrome OS, More Info, Change Channel, then Beta. Next, you’ll need to get into Developer Mode, which will entail wiping local data on the Chromebook. To do this, hold Refresh and Esc while pressing the power button to get into Recovery Mode, then hit Ctrl and D. Once that’s done, crack open the aforementioned terminal by pressing Ctrl, Alt, and T together. In that Crosh window, you’ll need to enter in three lines of code verbatim, which may look familiar to Linux users; “sudo cp /etc/chrome_dev.conf /usr/local/”, then “sudo mount –bind /usr/local/chrome_dev.conf /etc/chrome_dev.conf”, then finally “sudo echo “–enable-arc ” >> /etc/chrome_dev.conf”. Log out and back in without rebooting or powering down, and you’ll be able to access the Play Store.
Support for the Play Store on this device is still rudimentary, and will go away if the device fully powers down or reboots. Should that happen, though, you’re still in Developer Mode, so you won’t have to repeat this whole process. Just pop open your terminal again, and re-enter that second line of code above. If you’re a road warrior or somewhat forgetful, it may be a good idea to write down that chunk of code somewhere or memorize it well. There is, for now, no timeline on when the feature will hit the Stable channel for the Dell Chromebook 13.
