Google released the Chromecast Ultra this year, which is a 4K-capable Chromecast, instead of releasing a new regular Chromecast. With it doing 4K video, it also saw a price increase, from $35 to $69. The new dongle just recently started shipping, and now Google’s ad blitz for the new dongle has started. Today, they released a slew of new videos of ads for the new dongle. This is all in hopes that they become pretty popular gifts this holiday season.
There are 7 ads here, which range from a pretty short 7 seconds to 31 seconds in length. They are really good ads as well, since they quickly show exactly what Chromecast is capable of. These ads are likely being used as ads ahead of other videos on YouTube, as Android Police points out there are hundreds of thousands of views (in fact the first one has over 800,000 views) but there are zero comments. And considering Chromecast’s biggest feature is putting YouTube on the big screen, it makes sense to advertise right there on YouTube, instead of on regular TV – although those ads will likely come soon enough.
Chromecast has always been a pretty popular product for Google, even dating back to the original Chromecast in 2013. However, the Chromecast Ultra is going to have a bit of an issue becoming a big seller, namely due to its price increase over the regular Chromecast. But on the other hand, most users don’t have a 4K compatible TV just yet, so there may not be a need to pick up the Chromecast Ultra, unless you want to future-proof your Chromecast. The thought process behind Chromecast is pretty simple. You find a video on YouTube, Google Play Movies, etc., and just hit the Chromecast button on your browser, tablet or smartphone and then cast it to the TV. It really doesn’t get any easier. And last year, Google made some changes to Chromecast, so now you don’t even need to be on the same WiFi network to control Chromecast. Which makes things even easier.
