Hands-On With the 5.9-inch Huawei Mate 9

Earlier today, Huawei finally, officially unveiled the Huawei Mate 9 to the world, and it looks like all of the leaks were pretty much spot on. Huawei have announced the Mate 9 as well as the PORSCHE DESIGN Mate 9 today, both of which are larger smartphones for those that prefer a larger smartphone, and Galaxy Note 7 users might be impressed to see what Huawei have to offer them. With a 5.9-inch display, a metal build and Leica cameras, the Mate 9 seems every bit the smartphone for a phablet fan. Here, we’re taking a closer look at the Mate 9, while we take a closer look at the curved PORSCHE DESIGN Mate 9 here.

Despite the large 5.9-inch display, the Mate 9 doesn’t feel that large in the hand, and Huawei have done their best to make sure that the device doesn’t feel any bigger than it needs to be in the hand. Design wise, the Mate 9 looks like a mix between the Huawei P9 and Nova Plus devices launched earlier this year, the front looks like the P9, while the rear of the device has some curves to it that give it a less angular look and feel. The Type-C port at the bottom of the phone has a speaker and microphone port either side of it, and the overall fit and finish feels good and solid. Around the back, users will spot the two Leica cameras that are positioned one on top of the other as opposed to the side-by-side configuration in the P9, and just below them is the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. These Leica cameras aren’t flush to the design this time, perhaps due to the larger 20-megapixel resolution and overall sensor size of these two cameras.

Huawei are pretty happy with the overall fit and finish of the Mate 9, and they made a big deal out of how cool and safe the Mate 9 stays despite the new Super Charge technology that keeps these devices topped up with more juice in no time. As for the different colors, Huawei will be offering Black, Space Gray, Moonlight Silver, Champagne Gold, Mocha Brown and Ceramic White, with certain colors varying by region. We’ve got a number of shots of the more standard Space Gray version of the device here, but as you take a look at the images below, it looks good for a larger, 5.9-inch device.
