The Samsung Gear S3 Gets A Software Update In The U.S.

Samsung’s latest smartwatches, the Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier, were launched in South Korea and the U.S. earlier this month, and are currently available for purchase from various online and offline retailers around the country. Now, within just a few days of their U.S. launch, the all-new devices are getting an OTA update that is said to improve the GPS tracking for at least a couple of different apps on the smartwatch. While one of the applications that stands to benefit from the incoming update happens to be Samsung’s very own health app – S Health, the other one is the Golf Navi app that uses augmented reality to track shots and measure distances. The new software also reportedly brings a few changes to the time zone settings in the World Clock app for Russia. The update comes with version number R760XXU1APK6/R760OXA1APK6 and has a file size of 14.06MB.

The Gear S3 features a 1.3-inch circular Super AMOLED display panel with a resolution of 360×360 pixels and is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass SR+ that is made specifically for wearable devices like smartwatches. The Gear S3 comes with a minimalist design, while the Gear S3 Frontier sports a more rugged look. As for its hardware specs, the Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier are both powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz and comes with 4GB of built-in storage. Both smartwatches feature Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC and GPS connectivity, and runs on Tizen-based Wearable Platform 2.3.2.

The Gear S3 line was originally unveiled by Samsung back at IFA 2016 in September. The company claims that these devices feature a number of improvements over their predecessors the Gear S2 (which had 3G connectivity) and Gear S2 Classic. Some of the improvements include LTE connectivity (for the Gear S3 Frontier), larger displays, better performance, more accurate activity tracking and improved battery life. Both the Gear S3 Classic and the Gear S3 Frontier are priced at $349.99 in the U.S. and are already available for purchase from Amazon, Best Buy and Macy’s, among others. The devices are also available for purchase from Samsung’s official U.S. online store. The LTE-compliant Gear S3 Frontier can also be bought from Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, all of whom are offering the device on their respective networks.
