While the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices isn’t growing at an incredible speed, consumers all over the world are still gradually getting accustomed to the idea that they can ask their phone what’s on the agenda today, or order their connected speaker to put on some music, cast funny cat videos on a nearby TV, or wake them up in three hours. As things stand right now, smart speakers infused with digital assistants are some of the most popular IoT devices currently available for purchase. Amazon Echo has been on the market for approximately two years now, and Google recently debuted a competing speaker called Google Home.
As Echo is powered by Amazon’s Alexa assistant and Home is infused with the Google Assistant, you can easily hold a conversation with both devices. However, have you ever wondered what would happen if those two speakers were asked to talk to each other? YouTube user Adam Jakowenko certainly has, which is why he came up with a plan to make Amazon Echo activate Google Home. More specifically, Jakowenko set up a calendar event on both speakers and made sure that both devices speak each other’s trigger words while detailing his agenda. Not surprisingly, this resulted in an entertaining infinite loop as the Amazon Echo and Google Home went back and forth trying to tell each other what their owner has planned. The situation can best be described as a vocal version of two email auto-responders sending messages to each other, except the result is even funnier. In theory, this loop would only end once the scheduled event “takes place” or you manually stop the AIs from speaking in any way you see fit.
As noted by 9to5Google, one could even add an extra layer of complexity to this entertaining setup by scheduling a similar event on an iPhone with the “Hey Siri” feature enabled. In any case, you can check out Jakowenko’s fun experiment in the video below. The said YouTube user has yet to confirm whether any AI-infused speakers were harmed during the filming of this video, though hopefully all ended well for them.
