If you’ve been around long enough on the Android platform, you might be familiar with AirDroid, an application that makes it simple and quick to mirror your Android device on your computer so you can control it from there. Earlier this week it was reported that the app was full of security vulnerabilities and was a serious risk to its users. Today, it’s being reported that AirDroid has started working on a new beta update that will fix these issues and that it’s planning to roll it out to users in the near future, which is certainly a good thing for anyone that is still using the app.
According to the latest details, the update for AirDroid will be for the beta and it will be version 4.0.0.2. This has the fixes included according to AirDroid themselves, but that said they’re still waiting to hear from Zimperium, the security firm that discovered and then publicly disclosed the details of the security risks, on whether or not the update fixes every security issue that was initially found. While this is potentially good news, there are still a couple of notable details that will be important to keep in mind. The first is that you have to be part of the AirDroid beta if you want these fixes. This isn’t a really big issue as you can simply sign up for the beta and then download the update. No big deal.
The downside is that some users may not want to be stuck with a beta version of the app and service, and may prefer to have a stable version of the app. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when a stable update will hit, which in turn leads to the other issue. Right now there is no exact time frame on when users can expect to see the update sent out, as the company behind AirDroid wants to know for sure that this latest beta has indeed fixed all the security risks that were found by Zimperium. Until then, users are left waiting, and may be better off not using the application for the time being.
