Twitter has had their hand in other apps before, like Vine, and that didn’t work out too well. But Periscope is still doing pretty well, even though it’s facing more competition from the likes of Facebook and even YouTube. Periscope is an app that allows you to go live instantly, and share virtually anything with your followers. It has become a pretty popular tool for a lot of media organizations, as well as YouTube stars, as they can instantly connect with their fans. Now with Periscope being owned by Twitter, one would expect that the two would be pretty well integrated. Well that hasn’t always been the case, but today, it’s a step closer.
On Wednesday, Twitter announced that you can now go live on Twitter using Periscope, but without having the Periscope app downloaded. One might wonder how this is possible, and it’s pretty simple. You login to Periscope with your Twitter account, so essentially Twitter already has your account linked. Making integration pretty seamless on the user side of things. To get things started, all you need to do is open a new Tweet. Then click on the camera icon and then the “Live” button on the far right side. And you’ll be live on Periscope from the Twitter app.
Now this “Live” button has been available in Twitter for quite some time. However it was pretty useless unless you had the Periscope app downloaded and were logged in. Twitter has essentially made it much simpler to stream on Periscope. Which is a way that they can bring in more users for Periscope and hopefully keep users on Twitter at the same time. A problem the company has been struggling with for quite a few quarters now. One can’t help but wonder if this new feature is in response to Facebook’s video offering, Facebook Live. Which allows you to go live from a status update, all within the Facebook app. Both companies know that the future is in video, with users watching more and more video everyday, not to mention the fact that video ads pay more than standard text ads. Which will not only help them grow but bring in more revenue. That’s something that investors love.
