As organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays become increasingly popular, display makers continue to gear up for the high demand. According to a recent report, several China-based display manufacturers are now making new investments in OLED technology, with EverDisplay Optronics now building a new AMOLED factory expected to reach full production capacity in year 2021.

Throughout the past few years it seemed as if liquid-crystal display (LCD) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technologies were locked in a never-ending battle for market supremacy, but lately it’s becoming more obvious that OLED technology is slowly but surely winning over LCD in the smartphone segment and others, including virtual reality (VR). Obviously, demand for OLED panels will continue to increase as more smartphone makers will decide to utilize OLED display technology over LCD, and because of this, numerous display makers – including Samsung, LG, and Foxconn – have already begun increasing their OLED production capacity. In more recent news, a handful of China-based display makers are now switching gears to prepare for the increased demand in AMOLED panels, and Shanghai-based EverDisplay Optronics is making a 27.278 billion Yuan ($3.95 billion) investment in a new 6th-generation (6G) AMOLED production facility which will have a monthly production capacity of 30,000 glass substrates measuring 1,500 x 1,850 millimeters each. The factory will be geared to manufacture 1-to-15-inch AMOLED panels, and trial production will begin in January 2019, with the manufacturer aiming to be able and use the factory at full capacity in the year 2021. The factory will be built in Shanghai City, China, and will have a total floor space of 460,000 square meters.

In addition, China-based display manufacturer BOE Technology is also building a new 6th-generation flexible OLED factory in western China. The company plans to invest 46.5 billion Yuan ($6.73 billion) in the new facility, but reports make no mention in regards to when BOE Technology will have the factory up and running at full capacity. Aside from EverDisplay Optronics and BOE Technology, the report also mentions a number of other China-based display makers who will either expand the AMOLED production capacity in existing facilities or refit their factories in order to join the AMOLED market. The list of manufacturers includes China Star Optoelectronics Technology, Truly Opto-Electronics, Tianma Micro-electronics, Visionox, and Royol.
