Having launched the modular LG G5 to mixed reviews earlier this year, the South Korean consumer electronics company recently launched its successor to the LG V10 to a much better reception from the media and consumers alike. Named the LG V20, the device was launched in India earlier today, although its predecessor was never sold in the country officially. As for the LG G5, it might not have managed to set the global sales charts on fire, but many have still been wondering about its successor, the LG G6, which is expected to be unveiled next February at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain. As is usually the case with any new product launch these days, the internet has been abuzz recently with speculation over the upcoming device.
While we have already read quite a few rumors about LG’s next-generation flagship, the latest news now seems to suggest that the upcoming handset could well be waterproof and have wireless charging capabilities. What’s more, the company is said to be trying out an adhesive for waterproofing the LG G6 instead of going the way of its compatriot Samsung, who uses a tape to waterproof its latest flagships. The information was published recently by South Korean news publication ET News, which also claimed that the upcoming device will unfortunately lose one of the more popular features of its predecessor – the removable battery.
While the concept of a modular smartphone has been around for quite some time, companies big and small have so far failed to come up with a decent, consumer-friendly solution, and even Google has been unable to deliver on its much-hyped Project Ara until now. The modular LG G5, while lauded for being different from its competitors, was also criticized by some sections of the media for what they felt was a poor implementation of a novel idea in a flagship device from a mainstream company. So while many tech fans and industry watchers may have expected LG to give the modular experiment a quite burial, some users may be disappointed if the company indeed gets rid of the removable battery with the LG G6. It remains to be seen if the lure of a waterproof LG G6 that can be charged wirelessly will do anything to cheer them up.
