The 2017 NVIDIA SHIELD has received a stability update this afternoon as an NVIDIA employee has just announced the update over on the GeFroce forums. The update doesn’t seem to add anything new to the device, as it only mentions stability and performance improvements that have been added to the machine, and it wouldn’t bring anything new as NVIDIA just recently rolled out a massive new update for their new SHIELD Android TV that introduces Android 7.0 Nougat and a handful of new features, with things like the new NVIDIA Games app and the ability to watch Amazon Prime Video content on the platform.
On that note, it is mentioned that in addition to the stability and performance enhancements for the SHIELD Android TV, the update also includes an update to the NVIDIA Accessories, which likely just improves the stability and performance of those devices just as the update does for the SHIELD unit itself. This is only going to be an update that is meant for the new NVIDIA SHIELD, although it’s likely possible that the 2015 models of the SHIELD may need this update as well if they have the same bugs with the big update, which is still scheduled to happen next week.
If you have the new NVIDIA SHIELD and the remote on hand, you can go and download the new update which pushes your system to 5.0.1 and install it on the SHIELD TV. Once this is finished you can install the accessories update which fixes a bug on the SHIELD Remote that would cause the remote to stop responding. If you’ve experienced that particular issue with your own remote then this update should fix it, of course not all users are likely to have had the problem so you may not need to worry about it. That being said, it likely won’t hurt to have the accessories update installed anyway as the issue could always surface later for users who haven’t had any problems yet. The update can be found on the SHIELD TV itself after you turn it on, and NVIDIA notes that the accessories update should pop up in the “recommendations row” afterward.
