ASUS has announced a new Chromebook model at CES 2017, in the shape of the Chromebook Flip C302, although it had previously been leaked online. As one would expect from the name, the Chromebook Flip C302 features a full 360-degree hinge, meaning customers can convert the device from a traditional Chromebook type of laptop computer to a tablet form. The device may also be arranged so as to support itself on a desk in so-called tent mode. The new Chromebook is available with a range of different storage, processor and RAM configurations. However, all models ship with the same multi-touch 12.5-inch, 1080p resolution (or FHD, Full High Definition) display and at least 4 GB of RAM but the computer supports 8 GB. There are three different chipsets available; an unspecified Intel Pentium chip, a dual core Intel Core m3 at 2.2 GHz and a more powerful dual core Intel Core m7 clocked at up to 3.1 GHz. ASUS is offering the Chromebook with 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB of internal storage, plus a microSD slot. Additionally, the Chromebook Flip C302 dispenses with traditional USB ports and instead ships with two new-generation, high-performance USB Type-C ports, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Other features of the Chromebook Flip C302 include a tough, metal chassis, a backlit keyboard, a brightness sensor for the display, the promise of ten hour battery life, 802.11ac high-performance Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. ASUS has also provided the Chromebook Flip C302 with “high-quality stereo speakers and extra-large resonant chambers,” meaning it can “generate up to 87dB of high-fidelity audio.” Given the potential for a 128 GB model and a FHD display, the Chromebook Flip C302 could make for a mobile media station. Interestingly enough, ASUS’ website explains that the new Chromebook Flip C302 ships with the Chrome Web Store and access to the Google Play Store and Android applications coming later this year.
As for pricing, the ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 will cost from $499, which does make it one of the more expensive Chromebook models. This is also presumably for the entry level model and adding a more powerful processor, more RAM or storage will increase the price accordingly. Currently the Chromebook Flip C302 is showing as unavailable on the ASUS webstore, but several companies are preparing to sell the new model. If you are keen to get your hands on this smart looking, powerful and flexible new Chromebook, it is likely to be available very soon.
