Today, AT&T announced a new International Day Pass which will cost $10/day, to allow customers to use their domestic plan while they are abroad. This means for $10/day you’ll be able to use the minutes, texts and data on your plan like you would when you are at home. It’s not quite the same as what carriers like T-Mobile, Sprint and Project Fi offer, where they allow you to use your plan in other countries without paying anything extra. But it is a much better alternative to paying for each minute, text or megabyte that you may consume while you’re traveling abroad. All of that can add up fairly quickly.
In their press release, AT&T does note that this International Day Pass may be removed from a customers’ account if they are spending more than half of their minutes, texts or data outside of the US, for two months. This means that if you are planning to head over to another country for a few months – or even move there – this may not be the best idea for you to use your smartphone. And at $10/day, that adds up pretty quickly, and picking up a local SIM would likely be cheaper. This new feature from AT&T is set to go live this Friday, January 27th. So customers will be able to add this International Day Pass to their account and not have to worry about getting charged loads of roaming charges while they are on vacation. Making things a bit simpler.
The International Day Pass is available in over 100 countries, which include some in Asia, the Caribbean and Europe. As well as all countries in Central America and South America. You can check out the full list of supported countries in the source link below. AT&T is making roaming a bit easier, and this new day pass is in line with what Verizon offers. Verizon’s TravelPass is $10/day except in Canada and Mexico where it is just $2/day. It’s a bit surprising to see that AT&T didn’t decrease the amount for Canada, but you can already roam in Mexico pretty easily, since AT&T has bought two of the carriers down there.
