Garmin Unveils Fenix 5 Smartwatch Line At CES 2017

Garmin has introduced three new high-end multisport watches at the CES 2017 as part of its popular Fenix line of GPS-enabled smartwatches. The company unveiled the Fenix 5, Fenix 5X and the Fenix 5S earlier today, with the last device on the list designed specifically for women. As with the earlier devices in the Fenix range, all three newly-released wearables include GPS and GLONASS that should help users measure speed, distance and other metrics when running, biking, hiking, swimming and performing a variety of other outdoor activities. The watches feature daily activity tracking and come with Garmin Elevate, the company’s proprietary optical heart-rate sensor. The devices also have the ability to show notifications from smartphones running on Android or iOS, and will be available for purchase by March.

The Fenix 5 devices are made out of stainless steel, and Garmin claims they are “thinner, lighter, and more versatile” than any of its previous offerings. What’s more, the devices are said to be waterproof down to 100 meters, and according to the company, the batteries are large enough to last more than a week on a single charge with normal usage. Some of the sensors that are common to all the three variants are a three-axis compass, a gyroscope and a barometric altimeter. The company is also introducing a brand new feature with the new lineup that will allow users to customize their watches in a way that was not available in previous-generation Garmin devices. Called the ‘QuikFit Release System’, the new technology will help users swap out watch-bands without needing dedicated tools for the purpose.

Taking a quick look at the three new devices, the Fenix 5X is by far the biggest and most well-equipped of the lot. It comes with a 51mm dial and comes with a number of features in addition to the ones mentioned already. It has a number of pre-loaded maps that are said to aid in navigation, including topographic US maps and routable cycling maps. The device also comes with Wi-Fi connectivity and a scratch-resistant sapphire lens display. It will come with an MSRP of $699.99. The Fenix 5 measures 47mm in diameter, and will come in two different models. While the standard-issue model will cost $599.99 and will come with a mineral glass display, the more premium Fenix 5 Sapphire will offer Wi-Fi connectivity and a Sapphire glass display for an additional $100.

Finally, there’s the Fenix 5S, which, as mentioned earlier, is the very first Garmin smartwatch to be designed specifically keeping women in mind. That being the case, it comes with a smaller form-factor, measuring 42mm in diameter. It does, however, offer most of the features found in the Fenix 5, and comes with a number of customization options, including white, turquoise and black silicone bands. Much like the Fenix 5, it too, comes in two separate models, with the base version costing $599.99. The Fenix 5S Sapphire with Wi-Fi and Sapphire glass display, meanwhile, carries a price-tag of $699.99.
