Huawei is planning to launch a Tango-based smartphone in the near future it seems, at least according to the source. That is more or less every single piece of info that the source reported on the matter following an interview with Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu, during the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in Las Vegas. For those of you who are not aware of this, there are not that many Tango-based phones out there, well, only two actually, and both of those devices have been manufactured by Asian companies.
The devices in question are the Lenovo PHAB 2 Pro and the newly-announced ASUS ZenFone AR. The Lenovo PHAB 2 Pro debuted last year, while ASUS introduced the ZenFone AR during CES 2017 a couple of days ago. So, what does it mean to be Tango-enabled? Well, Tango is basically Google’s Augmented Reality (AR) platform, so when we talk about a Tango-enabled smartphone, we basically mean a smartphone that is equipped with some special sensors on the back which allow its camera and phone software to provide us with AR experience. As an example, you can project a dinosaur in your front yard through the device, though it will be visible only on the display of your Tango-enabled smartphone, of course, as we’re not talking about projectors here. If you’ve played Pokemon GO by any chance, you’ll have a pretty good idea what we’re talking about here, even though Tango is a far more advanced form of Augmented Reality.
At the moment, we don’t have any spec info when it comes to Huawei’s Tango-enabled smartphone, as the company’s CEO really did not want to share any details. All we know for sure is that this phone will have to sport depth and motion tracking sensors on the back in order to be able to use its AR capabilities, as is the case with the Lenovo PHAB 2 Pro and ASUS ZenFone AR. That phone will probably run Android 7.0 Nougat, and on top of it, you’ll get Huawei’s Emotion UI (EMUI) 5.0 skin. We will report back as soon as more info leaks, or Huawei opts to share more info with us, whichever comes first, so stay tuned for that.
