Yesterday, ahead of CES, LG Electronics introduced three new Super UHD TVs enhanced with Nano Cell technology, which is described by the company as the “most advanced color-enhancing LCD panel technology” available to date. The new Super UHD TV series includes three models (SJ9500, SJ8500 and SJ8000), all equipped with Active HDR and Dolby Vision technologies to allow for multiple HDR formats.
Backtracking to LG’s proprietary Nano Cell technology, according to the manufacturer this type of LCD display features “uniformly-sized particles approximately one nanometer in diameter” which create subtle, accurate colors even at wider angles compared to other TVs. LG claims that its new Super UHD TVs coupled with Nano Cell display technology are capable of consistent colors reproduction at wider viewing angles “with virtually no color difference” for viewers sitting directly in front of the panel and those watching from a 60-degree angle. Providing a more detailed explanation as to how Nano Cell technology achieves these results, LG claims that the panels absorb surplus light wavelengths in order to “enhance the purity of colors displayed”. The ability to absorb light allows the LCD panels to filter distinct colors much more accurately, and the end result is the rendering of “each color exactly as it was intended by the original content producer”. In addition, LG Nano Cell technology reduces image instability, color fading, and can also reduce on-screen light glow for a higher quality image in a variety of ambient lighting conditions.
LG’s new Super UHD TVs are also compatible with a wider range of HDR technologies, including Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log Gamma, HDR10, and Advanced HDR by Technicolor. These technologies, together with the new HDR Effect feature, have the ability to process SDR images frame-by-frame in order to improve contrast ratios as well as brightness in specific areas. The new TV lineup adopts the latest webOS Smart TV platform (webOS 3.5 up from 3.0), giving quick access to services including Amazon and Netflix with only a press of a single button on the Magic Remote. The South Korean tech giant also mentions that the new Super UHD TVs carry a “stunning Ultra Slim” design, with the 55-inch LG Super UHD SJ9500 TV measuring only 6.9 millimeters at its thinnest point.
