The Nest Protect fire alarm and the GE Appliances range of smart kitchen units are suitable for hand-in-hand usage by nature, but Nest and GE Appliances recently announced that they will be upping the ante on that companionship by having the two work in concert to help stop kitchen fires. The two devices work to detect fires, stop them before they start, and notify a user that something has happened. The way it works is actually fairly simple; when Nest Protect detects smoke, it will ask connected GE Appliances kitchen ovens if they’re on, and turn them off if they are. This will trigger a push notification to a user’s smartphone, alerting them that something is up in the kitchen. This is, of course, only the tip of the iceberg; the setup packs a decent number of new functions.
Some of the new features that users can access thanks to integration between Nest Protect and GE Appliances include alerts when the oven is on and nobody is around, as well as a dual-spectrum scanner to check for fast and slow fires. The setup features automatic monthly system sound tests, along with a convenient App Silence setting that lets a user tell the app that all is actually well when an alert is sent without any need for one. A Safety Checkup feature to check on full system health from a connected smartphone is also on board, along with a guarantee that the entire thing should last a decade with minimal maintenance.
All of these features should be available now to all owners of the Nest Protect system and any Wi-Fi connected GE Appliances ovens. While issuing commands and receiving alerts with GE Appliances’s connected units has been an option in the past and they have been involved with other IoT players before, this marks the first active kitchen fire prevention effort produced by the world of IoT. This combination brings a number of new options to the GE Appliances ovens that users did not have at their disposal before, thanks to Nest Protect’s unique features. More highly useful and practical real-world benefits of the modern smart home are sure to pop up as time goes on, technology advances, and more players hop on board.
