The Samsung Galaxy S8 has been a hot topic on the rumor mill as of late, and now a new report out states that the Galaxy S8 will sport an edge-to-edge display, effectively having no left or right bezels. The two devices, which have been rumored to be named the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, will both feature screens between 5 and 6-inches. The exact sizes were not given, but the overall size of the phones will be similar to last year’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.
The two devices are said to be codenamed “Dream” and “Dream 2”, and both will feature curved displays. Effectively making the only difference between the two, the screen size. The edge-to-edge displays, which are being referred to as “infinity” displays, will leave just a tiny bit of bezel at the top and bottom of the device. Due to the screen-to-body ratio being so low (meaning very little bezel), Samsung has moved the fingerprint sensor to the back of the device. So it won’t be underneath the display, like many had thought it would be. If you were wondering about the 3.5mm headphone jack, that is staying put.
Samsung is said to be using the same “duo pixel” camera that was on the Galaxy S7 last year. There will be a few changes to the camera, but it won’t be a huge upgrade over last year’s model. It’ll be powered by the Snapdragon 835, like many other rumors have suggested. What’s interesting here is that there is no mention of an Exynos variant. Adding more fuel to the fire about the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus only having one variant with the same processor. 64GB will be included for storage, along with a micro SD card slot that can support up to 256GB. Samsung will be debuting a slew of accessories with the two devices, including a dock that will turn the device into an Android desktop.
The report out of The Guardian does also suggest that Bixby will indeed be included in the new Galaxy S8. They didn’t specifically say Bixby, but did mention there would be an AI assistant available. Two of their sources noted that Samsung was working with other partners to include outside data with Bixby, but there’s no word on whether that will be included at launch.
Currently, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are expected to launch at an Unpacked event in March and then be available for sale in late April. Samsung Mobile’s head has already confirmed that the devices won’t be announced at Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona. This is likely due to the repercussions of the Galaxy Note 7 recalls last year.
