BlackBerry’s upcoming smartphone, currently going by the ‘Mercury’ name, is now rumored to come equipped with a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera which sports a Sony IMX 378 sensor and will be capable of 4K video capturing. While the front-facing camera is said to come in 8-megapixel form and is either going to be making use of a Samsung S5K4H8 sensor or an OmniVision OV 8856 sensor. In either case, it is said to sport a 1.12μm pixel size and be able to record in 1080p at 30FPS. According to the latest information coming by way of known tipster, Roland Quandt (aka @rquandt).
While a number of smartphones do already come packing a 12-megapixel/8-megapixel rear/front camera configuration, Quandt does specially highlight that what is on offer with the BlackBerry Mercury in the camera department is the same as what is on offer already with the Google Pixel and Pixel XL. This is of particular importance as the two ‘Google Phones’ currently are accredited with having one of, if not the best, camera experience on a mobile device. Of course, one of the reasons the Pixel(s) are valued so high in this department is due to the software tweaks that are in play. So while the BlackBerry Mercury is now said to come with the same hardware, it does not necessarily mean that will automatically equate to the same user experience. Either way, what is on offer with the BlackBerry Mercury should be come clear in the next few weeks as it is now expected that the Mercury will make its formal debut at MWC 2017.
Although in reality, the Mercury has already been unveiled as it was shown off at CES where the industry was able to take a good look at the new smartphone. In spite of that closer look, no technical details were provided. So there is still room for surprises in this area. That said, the Mercury might not be the only BlackBerry device to make an appearance at MWC 2017, as earlier today the same source for this current information suggested that a new “BBC100-1” BlackBerry device is on its way. One which sports a 5.5-inch display, 4GB RAM, 32GB internal storage and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor. In terms of the cameras, this other rumored smartphone comes with suspiciously similar MP counts to what is suggested here with the Mercury – a 13-megapixel/8-megapixel rear/front combo.
