Xiaomi has allegedly decided not to announce how many smartphones they’ve sold in 2016. This news surfaced in a blog post on TechCrunch China, according to Digitimes. Now, this comes as a bit of a surprise, as quite a few people were eager to see how many smartphones did Xiaomi sell last year, in order to compare their shipments with those of Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, etc. The alleged reason behind this decision is… well, the company is under a transition period, so it seems like they want to keep such stats a secret, in a way.
Now, Xiaomi did not ship as many devices as Huawei (and some other China-based companies) last year, and that could be a part of the reason why Xiaomi is not planning to release their smartphone shipments for 2016. In any case, the company had managed to ship 70 million smartphones in 2015, which was an improvement compared to 61 million units they were able to move in 2014. Now, for comparison’s sake, the company sold ‘only’ 18.7 million handsets in 2013, so you can see how much Xiaomi grew in just a couple of years. According to reports, the company had managed to sell 14.8 million devices in Q1 2016, and around 23 million smartphones in the first half of the year. If this info is to be believed, Xiaomi certainly did not sell more devices than last year, and that could be yet another reason why they’ve decided not to share their sales numbers.
Xiaomi had recently revealed their revenues in the Indian market for 2016, the company had managed to generate $1 billion in revenues, and the company’s online service income doubled to $1 billion last year. The company plans to open up 1,000 exclusive shops in China in the next three years, and the three exclusive shops that are already active have managed to do well for Xiaomi, as they generated 100 million Yuan ($14.58 million) in revenues last year. All in all, this will be an exciting year for Xiaomi, and it will certainly be interesting to see if they can get back to the right path as far as smartphone sales are concerned, as they’ve managed to fall behind the competition in terms of sheer smartphone sales numbers last year.
