A remake of a classic NES game A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is now available on Android smartphones and tablets as the game hit the Google Play Store last Wednesday. This platformer was initially released in the West back in 1990 and was remade for PC and consoles in 2009. The remake, titled A Boy and His Blob, is now available for purchase for Android devices, though developers note that the game is still in development. This explains the fact that its Google Play Store listing says “A Boy and His Blob (Unreleased),” though the current version of the game seemingly runs like a finished product and has no apparent technical issues. The Android port of A Boy and His Blob was released by Majesco Entertainment, the same company which published the original game and its remake. While the Google Play Store listing doesn’t specifically mention this, the game was likely ported to Android by WayForward Technologies, a Valencia, California-based studio which made the 2009 remake and also developed a number of other mobile games like Adventure Time: Puzzle Quest, Descendants, and Til Morning’s Light.
As for the game itself, its title is relatively self-explanatory seeing how A Boy and His Blob has players assume a role of a small boy who feeds a friendly blob with jelly beans. Once fed, the blob is able to transform into various shapes and help you solve puzzles. These relatively simple but challenging gameplay mechanics are served with an emotional story that has you saving your blob’s homeland from an evil emperor. Generally speaking, the game has aged reasonably well and is still worth playing, especially if you’ve never had the chance to experience the original.
A Boy and His Blob can be purchased from the Google Play Store for a one-time fee of $4.99. The game features no ads or in-app purchases and is compatible with most contemporary smartphones and tablets seeing how it only requires a device running Android 2.3 Gingerbread or newer.
