Samsung just took to Twitter to tease the Exynos 9 system-on-chip (SoC), the company’s next flagship chipset that will possibly power a number of its upcoming high-end devices like the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. The teaser that can be seen above tells us to “discover cloud 9 with Exynos” that’s apparently “coming soon,” which indicates that the next chipset may be the start of the Exynos 9 series. The company’s upcoming flagship SoC will almost certainly be manufactured using Samsung’s new 10nm process and this latest teaser all but confirms that the Exynos 9 will be commercialized over the course of this year, likely sooner rather than later.
With that in mind, it’s reasonable to presume that the Exynos 9 will be included in some variants of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, as well as the Galaxy Note 8. Samsung’s recent flagship devices were fueled by both Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and Samsung’s very own Exynos chipsets, depending on the markets in which they were sold, so it seems likely that the South Korean tech giant will continue pursuing that strategy over the course of this year. Unfortunately, there’s still no word on what kind of specs we can expect from the Exynos 9, though the chipset may come equipped with the Mali-G71 GPU that was previously rumored to be included in the Exynos 8895. Regardless, Samsung’s next high-end SoC will likely at least match Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 in terms of performance. It remains to be seen how long the Seoul-based tech giant will take to unveil its next-generation chipset, but it’s worth noting that this teaser has been posted only ten days before Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off. Due to that timing, it’s possible that Samsung will announce the chip during this year’s Barcelona-based trade show.
If that doesn’t happen, the largest phone maker in the world may reveal more details about the Exynos 9 once it unveils the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. The company’s upcoming pair of Android flagships is currently expected to be officially announced in late March, so whatever happens, more information is bound to follow soon.
