The latest update for Flipboard improves the popular news app with a Smart Magazines feature, the company announced on Wednesday. The new iteration of the app was designed to help people read about some highly specific topics at any given moment in just a few taps. While the update introduces several new ways aimed at accomplishing that goal, all of them are based on Smart Magazines. To access them, simply open the Flipboard app and swipe the Cover Stories tab to the left to access the new Passion Picker. The following interface allows you to select particular topics and quickly start browsing the latest news related to your current interests. While customizable, all Smart Magazines are curated by experts to ensure that the content presented to you is of the highest quality, the company explained.
Smart Magazines can even be filtered using subtopics which you can access by tapping the footer on the Passion Picker screen. While Flipboard already supported custom Magazines, the latest update provides users with an option of creating a Magazine that’s not only customized but also automatically updated. The new feature is accessible by tapping the “Make a Magazine” option on the Profile screen, just make sure you check “For reading specific sources” while you’re creating your personalized reading list. Users are able to create as many Smart Magazines as they like, all of which are based on a single, broad topic and can then be easily filtered using subtopics. However, only nine Smart Magazines can be displayed on your Flipboard home screen, while all of the other lists will be accessible through the app’s Magazines menu. Finally, while Passion Picker is a convenient way of creating a Smart Magazine, it was primarily created to promote this feature and is entirely optional to use as you can still find any content you’re interested in using other methods.
The new Flipboard update also ennobles the app with a number of other options for personalizing your user experience. The Home Carousel of the app can now be rearranged by tapping the three-dot icon located on any tile while search results can now be sorted and organized with more filters.
