T-Mobile customers using the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge have started receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update on Monday. The update is seemingly rolling out to all users and should be available for download in all parts of the United States shortly. As expected, T-Mobile is pushing Android 7.0 Nougat to the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge as an over-the-air (OTA) update, meaning you’ll soon receive a push notification prompting you to download the latest major iteration of Android. Just in case you’re feeling impatient, you can try searching for the update manually by opening the Settings app, tapping “About device,” and selecting the top option that says “Download updates manually.” The update is just over 1.5GB in size, so make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network before you start downloading it. Also, it’s recommended your device is either connected to a charger or has more than 50% of battery life left before you start installing the Android Nougat update.
T-Mobile reportedly started testing the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge in early February. Overall, the third largest carrier in the United States took around three months to optimize the source code of Android Nougat for Samsung’s 2016 flagship duo on its network. While T-Mobile customers have been waiting for Nougat for a while, three months isn’t an unusually long period for a carrier to optimize a major Android update for any device. Both the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge are expected to receive at least one more major iteration of Android in 2018. Apart from T-Mobile, AT&T also started pushing out Nougat to the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge in the United States.
Meanwhile, the South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer is getting ready to unveil its next pair of Android flagships, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. Both devices are expected to be officially announced on March 29 before hitting the market in the second half of April. Following the launch of the Galaxy S8 lineup, it’s possible that the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge will also be updated with Bixby, Samsung’s upcoming AI assistant that’s expected to debut with the company’s next flagship duo.
