Mobile payments solution LG Pay won’t debut on the upcoming LG G6 and may actually be scrapped by the company, South Korean outlet Newsis reports. The Seoul-based tech giant has apparently made significant changes to the development process of the LG Pay service and doesn’t have enough time to implement the product into its upcoming Android flagship that’s slated to be revealed in just a few weeks and launch in March. A spokesperson for the company told Newsis that LG is still considering which technologies and solutions could be used to commercialize LG Pay, but couldn’t say when or if the service will launch.
LG’s White Card service has already been delayed on numerous occasions. The last delay came in September when the company apparently decided to push the launch of its mobile payments solution to 2017. The South Korean tech giant already agreed to a partnership with Kookmin Bank in mid-2016 and was reportedly eyeing other potential collaborations in preparation for the launch of its service. Naturally, Samsung Pay and Apple Pay both stand to benefit if LG Pay gets scrapped seeing how they’ll have less competition to worry about. It remains to be seen whether the lack of LG Pay will impact the public perception and sales of the LG G6, though that doesn’t seem likely at the moment.
LG’s upcoming Android flagship is set to be unveiled on February 26, a day before Mobile World Congress (MWC) starts. The LG G6 is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 835 and up to 6GB of RAM. Following the disappointing performance of the LG G5, the South Korean phone maker opted to scrap the modular design with the LG G6 and ship a traditional phone with a large display panel and small bezels. LG’s next phone will certainly run some version of Android Nougat out of the box and has been rumored to feature an iris scanner. More information on the device is bound to surface soon as its unveil date is drawing near. In the meantime, it remains to be seen whether LG will officially any new details on the future of LG Pay.
