LineageOS, the successor to CyanogenMod, has now released a few more builds of their Nougat-based custom ROM. Some of the devices that now have support include the HTC 10, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014, Wileyfox Storm, Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 WiFi, and the GSM unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II. These are all running on LineageOS 14.1, which is based off of Android 7.1, and that is actually the latest version of Android, so you’ll be on the latest and greatest that Google has to offer, always a nice thing.
The team has continually been adding support for more and more devices over the past few weeks, as they have been making the move from CyanogenMod on over to LineageOS. This all happened after the falling out that Cyanogen Inc suffered earlier this year. Which forced Steve Kondik, the founder of CyanogenMod and Cyanogen Inc, out and he returned to the CyanogenMod team. However, for legal reasons, he had to rebrand the open source project, and thus LineageOS was born. These builds of the custom ROM is not really that different from CyanogenMod, the major differences are the removal of the CyanogenMod branding within the OS, and bringing in the LineageOS branding. But there will definitely be some big changes coming to the ROM in the next few months as the team really gets going.
It seems about every week a new round of devices get support for LineageOS, there doesn’t really seem to be a method to the devices that get support. As some of them are fairly new devices, while others are quite old, like the Samsung Galaxy S II which is nearly 6 years old now. But then again, that shows that there are people still using that device, and they do deserve to have the latest version of Android on their smartphone. For those that are interested in flashing LineageOS, it’s important to remember that you will need your device rooted and you will need to flash the latest Gapps package along with the ROM, otherwise you’ll be missing the Google Apps.
