A CAD drawing of what looks like a slightly redesigned Galaxy S5 with a curved screen is depicted in the latest design patent awarded to Samsung by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). While the body of the device is slightly different to the one encasing Samsung’s 2014 Android flagship, the design of the back speaker seems remarkably reminiscent of the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 Neo, and the Galaxy Note 4. However, the edges of the device are fully curved and smoothened out and the design seemingly features no physical buttons, though it does sport a small camera bump.
The USPTO also awarded Samsung with another design patent that only consists of a rough sketch depicting a device that not only has a curved screen similar to the one seen above but also features a fully concave body. The display panel of the device actually curves around the edges all the way to the back where one can also see a speaker that’s extremely similar to the aforementioned one. Likewise, the second design patent granted to the South Korean tech giant shows no physical buttons. The design looks extremely clean and simple, but seeing how it’s just a rough drawing, it’s likely that the company is still experimenting with the idea. Seeing how both design patents were already granted, the USPTO didn’t publish any other details regarding them like it would have done with a patent application. Due to that state of affairs, there’s no basis to connect these designs with any particular hardware or even just materials. However, if Samsung truly plans to commercialize either design, more information on the matter will possibly follow sooner rather than later seeing how the Seoul-based tech giant has been applying for similar designs in both the United States and South Korea for years now. Furthermore, recent rumors and leaks suggest that both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will feature on-screen buttons that are presumably also utilized by a number of other patents recently awarded to Samsung, including these latest ones. In other words, Samsung is apparently slowly implementing its patented design ideas into practice.
