Reddit: The Offical App received a new update on Monday which introduces a minor redesign of the popular social app. Among other things, the update version 2.1.9 adds a bottom navigation bar to the app that features a minimalist design and was intended to facilitate the process of using one of the most popular websites on the planet. The navigation bar allows users to quickly switch between the front page and their subscriptions, access their personal and mod inbox, and check out their profile. The individual sections of the app were seemingly unchanged with the last update. For example, the Profile screen still lists shortcuts for your post and comment history, saved posts, upvoted and hidden content, and uploaded images.
The bottom navigation bar works as expected and doesn’t seem to exhibit any performance issues. Unfortunately, the bar cannot be navigated by swiping the screen left and right, though those gestures are supported on the Inbox screen where you can quickly swipe between your messages, comments, post replies, and mod mail. The bottom navigation bar in the current version of the app is fixed as you cannot modify it or hide it in any way. Scrolling through subreddits also doesn’t hide the bar which can sometimes be an inconvenience, especially to people who are used to third-party Reddit apps like Relay and Reddit Is Fun which support this functionality. Nonetheless, Reddit: The Official App is still as stable as ever with this latest update and is probably the safest option for people who want a convenient way to browse Reddit without giving system permissions to third-party solutions.
The addition of the bottom navigation bar also resulted in the removal of the so-called hamburger menu that was featured in the previous versions of Reddit: The Official App. Apart from that addition, the update version 2.1.9 also ships with an overflow menu for comment options, a Featured carousel designed to help users discover new content, and a number of performance improvements and bug fixes that are yet to be specified.
