While the Sony Smartwatch 3 won’t officially be getting Android Wear 2.0, that hasn’t stopped current owners of the smartwatch from starting a petition to get Sony and Google to update the smartwatch. It’s not surprising that the Smartwatch 3 isn’t getting the update, seeing as most of the other smartwatches announced in 2014 are also being left out. The Sony Smartwatch 3 debuted around the same time as the LG G Watch R, Moto 360 and the ASUS ZenWatch. It actually became a pretty popular smartwatch, largely due to the fact that it was a bit more water-proof than the others on the market. It also had things like NFC, which Android Wear wasn’t using at the time, but is now using for Android Pay.
Last week, Google unveiled Android Wear 2.0’s final release. After being delayed a few months, it’s finally set to start rolling out this month. And the LG Watch Sport and Watch Style are already available at the Google Store, Verizon and AT&T with Android Wear 2.0. This update to Android Wear is a pretty big one, in fact Google calls it the biggest one to date, and brings in a slew of new features as well as an entirely new interface. Android Wear is still fairly new for Google, so they still aren’t entirely sure what the best UI is for your wrist, a big reason why the UI got a huge overhaul this time around.
At the time of writing, the petition on Change.org has over 1,700 signatures from Sony Smartwatch 3 owners who want to see the company work with Google to release the update to their smartwatch. Now this doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen, but it is pretty impressive that there are this many people still with this smartwatch. The Sony Smartwatch 3 hasn’t had a successor just yet. It’s unclear if Sony was waiting for Android Wear 2.0 to come out – like many other manufacturers, which is why 2016 was a slow year for Android Wear smartwatches – or if they have given up. A few other manufacturers have given up, as the smartwatch industry just isn’t as big as they thought it might be. Many manufacturers thought that smartwatches would be the new smartphone, but that hasn’t happened yet. It’s important to note though, that smartwatches are still fairly new so that may change.
