Samsung Debuts Four New Ads For The 2017 Oscars

Samsung aired four new ads at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony that took place last night. Two of the ads aired by the South Korean tech giant were focused on its specific products and the way the company believes they can change people’s lives, while the rest were looking to address the aftermath of the Galaxy Note 7 debacle as they were highlighting Samsung’s newly announced 8-point battery safety check, as well as other quality assurance practices that the company implemented in recent months. One of the ads was seemingly just an abridged version of the quality assurance promo that Samsung already aired earlier this month. All four videos can be seen below.

The part of Samsung’s latest promotional package that focuses on its products is rather unconventional, as half of the footage was dedicated to content creators who use Samsung’s smartphones to produce videos. The minute-long footage shows several YouTube personas like Casey Neistat and Simone Giertz explaining how the company’s products allowed them to practice video production with minimal expenses, which is something that would have hardly been possible a decade ago. The final video was made by Samsung in collaboration with The New York Times and shows various ways in which people react to virtual reality (VR) experiences while simultaneously promoting the company’s new Gear VR headset that was announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) yesterday.

Samsung is no stranger to promoting its product lineup at the Academy Awards, but the company opted for a radically different approach to doing so this year. Instead of having Hollywood celebrities advertise its creations, the Seoul-based conglomerate decided to put the spotlight on YouTube stars and new content creators that primarily appeal to millennials. The company’s insistence to not shy away from the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco and repeatedly apologize and highlight its new quality assurance practices is also bound to score some positive points for Samsung with consumers, though critics still argue that the 2016 phablet shouldn’t have been a fire hazard in the first place. Regardless, spring is bound to be an exciting period for Samsung’s fans as the firm will not only launch the Galaxy Tab S3 and the new Gear VR, but also the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus in the coming months.
