Sony Unveils SF-G Series As 'World's Fastest' SD Cards

Sony announced its new SF-G Series of SD cards designed for high-end photography and 4K video earlier this week, comprising of three storage options and promising read speeds of up to 300 MB/s and write speeds of up to 299 MB/s. Coupled with Sony’s firmware, the new SF-G Series is poised to become the fastest lineup of SD cards in the world, which should bode well with photography enthusiasts looking to improve their equipment. According to the press release, Sony’s new SD cards take advantage of some advanced functionalities that were designed and optimized for professionals, as well as photography and video enthusiasts with mirrorless or DSLR cameras.

The Sony SF-G Series will be available in three storage options, housing capacities of 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB, respectively. Thanks to the 299 MB/s write speeds and Sony’s algorithm, the new SD cards promise maximum performance for digital cameras, and contribute to a shorter buffer clearing time, as well as longer continuous high-resolution shooting for cameras supporting UHS-II. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the new SD cards are also compatible with UHS-I devices. Sony claims that users will be able to improve their workflow by pairing the Sony SF-G Series with a memory card reader in order to take advantage of fast transfer rates when transferring large files to a computer. This also ties in with another new product unveiled by the company in the same press release – the MRW-S1 high-speed SD memory card reader with UHS-II support. The reader will enable a fast transfer of data to personal computers equipped with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface.

Interestingly enough, Sony’s new SF-G Series promises great reliability as the SD cards are waterproof, X-ray proof, shock-proof, and temperature-resistant seeing how they boast an operating temperature range of -25 to 85 degrees Celsius, i.e. -13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. Furthermore, the Sony SF-G Series will be compatible with the company’s File Rescue free software, which can be used to recover media files including 4K XAVC-S video files as well as RAW images that may have been deleted or damaged. Both the new Sony SF-G Series and the Sony MRW-S1 SD card reader will be available for purchase this spring, but their pricing details are currently unknown.
