Sony’s latest mobile flagship phone is more of an evolution in the looks department, but a definite revolution in other ways. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a long name with a long list of specs that rivals the best of phones coming out over the next couple of months. Featuring a nearly identical looking body as the Sony Xperia XZ, there are still plenty of tweaks here to keep the XZ Premium not only looking different enough from the vanilla XZ, but also looking extra premium as the name suggests. Inside is a cutting edge Snapdragon 835 processor paired with ultra fast UFS 2.0 storage inside, and plenty of RAM to go around. MicroSD card support is here, as well as a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack too.
Sony has not only put its audio excellence into this package including high res audio support, LDAC and DSEE HX, as it does with every flagship phone, but also placed stereo front-facing speakers on the body with S-Force virtual surround sound support. Also found on the front is an incredible looking 4K display with HDR capability, meaning you can watch the best quality HDR video found on Amazon and Netflix, among other supported entertainment channels in the future of course. Regular content is still displayed in 1080p to save on battery and ensure the performance you would expect from a modern phone powered by Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
Although the screen is amazing, it’s not the first 4K screen or HDR screen on a phone, however the camera sensor Sony has placed inside the Xperia XZ Premium is definitely revolutionary. This brand new triple-layer sensor is the same one we heard Sony was developing earlier this month, and it features a third layer of embedded memory that enables the camera sensor to do completely new things. First up is the photo taking speed, which has increased 500% thanks to the fact that the storage sits right on the photo cell that actually takes the shot. This increase in speed helps keep distortion down when taking pictures of fast moving objects, allows Sony to take multiple shots at once for better noise reduction and multiple shots to catch that moment too. Certainly not least is the incredible 960fps 1080p video the sensor can take, resulting in the slowest motion of any phone out there by far. See it in action in our video below!
