Xiaomi Promotes Pinecone SoC With New Social Media Poll

Xiaomi’s upcoming Pinecone chipset brand has been the subject of speculation, leaks, and rumors for a while, and now they’ve posted a poll on Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo asking users which of the logos they have posted for Pinecone could be the final one. Xiaomi has laid out four possible logos for the poll, and is asking users to pick one among them by replying to the post on Weibo. The logo seems to have already been chosen based on other media posted by Xiaomi, but the poll seems aimed at generating hype. The four designs on offer are not terribly different from one another, so while the results of the poll may not matter all that much, the poll itself will drum up interest in the chipset.

So far, not much is known about Pinecone, aside from the fact that it will likely be unveiled officially on February 28, and it may end up in a number of upcoming phones like the Xiaomi Mi 6 and Xiaomi Mi 5c. The variant of the Mi 5c that showed up on Geekbench sported a lower-powered chip that was most likely the first Pinecone chip. Information has surfaced that pegs the octa-core Pinecone as a mid-range and upper mid-range chip, meant to compete with the likes of the MediaTek Helio P10 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625, which means that seeing a Pinecone chip in a Xiaomi flagship or one of their ultra-budget models is unlikely until further notice.

Ever since Pinecone first hit the headlines, it has not quite generated as much hype as newer entries from bigger players like Qualcomm and Samsung, but the potential for the chip to revolutionize Xiaomi’s lineup is certainly there, if they choose to develop and ship more variants of it, besides the mid-range chip that will reportedly be found in the upcoming Mi 5c. They have not officially announced much of anything about Pinecone right now, so we’ll have to wait until February 28 to see what their plans for this chipset include, and perhaps get a confirmation on whether the Mi 5C will be the first Pinecone-powered device.
