Android 7.1.2 may hit Pixel and Nexus devices on April 3rd according to a new rumor. The information stems from some Rogers Pixel and Nexus customers who are apparently being told that an update is going to be released for their devices on the above-mentioned date, though it doesn’t look like it was explained what exactly the update would be for. Taking that into consideration, it seems possible that the update could be for Android 7.1.2 Nougat as this version has been in beta testing as a developer preview since earlier this year and Rogers has been testing its VoLTE calling capabilities with subscribers who have devices running this beta software.
In addition to this, Google had already stated that it would take about two months at least before a public release of the next Nougat update software would make its way out to users, and it’s nearing that time frame in the next couple of weeks. While this is not exactly concrete information that can confirm the update is happening on April 3rd, it’s enough to at least suggest that it is a possibility as the timing does fit in with what’s been previously mentioned.
The Android 7.1.2 update will be mostly about bug fixes and improvements to the software, so users shouldn’t be expecting any sweeping changes in the way of new features and new visual updates, and it’s likely that most of the changes that will be included in the public release are already being experienced by users who have the software as part of the beta. There is at least one new feature that users will be able to look forward to though, and that’s the ability to select the location of your live wallpaper. For anyone on an older version of Nougat, when setting a live wallpaper it automatically sets to the home screen, while other wallpapers give you the option of setting it your home screen, your lock screen, or both. In Android 7.1.2, this option will be made available for live wallpapers as well. This might be a small change that only a handful of users will care about, but it will surely be nice for many to have the option. It is worth noting that there is no detail on which devices or which regions will receive the update first if it does happen on April 3rd, so for now users with compatible device will want to keep their eyes peeled.
