The Moto X Play is receiving a new software update, and it brings along the January Security Patch. On top of that, the usual bug fixes and stability improvements have been included in the package, though the detailed changelog hasn’t been released by Motorola yet. As this is a very minor update, the package weighs in at only 13MB. It is currently being pushed out to Moto X Play units in India, and other regions should receive it in the coming weeks.
The package is being rolled out as an over-the-air (OTA) update, so it might take a while before all users receive it. The system will automatically prompt you to download and install the update when it is ready for your device. However, if you can’t wait for that, you may manually check for the update by simply heading to the Settings app. From there, tap the “About device” option and then select “Software updates.” If the update is indeed ready for your device, you will be given the option to download it. The Moto X Play currently runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and is scheduled to receive Android 7.0 Nougat sometime in May. The handset was initially supposed to receive the update by the end of January, and this was confirmed by Motorola Germany, but the update seems to have been delayed for now.
Motorola first launched the Moto X Play in 2015, and it happens to be a mid-range device from the company. It packs a 5.2-inch full HD display and is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Running the show is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset, which is mated to a Adreno 405 GPU to handle graphics. Under the hood, it packs 2GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB of internal storage with the option to expand it via a micro SD card. For optics, it sports a 21-megapixel camera on its rear and it is coupled with a dual-LED flash. A 5-megapixel camera can be found on the front to handle selfies. For a device its size, the Moto X Play packs a huge 3,630mAh battery and it also support TurboPower fast charging. It shipped out with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but has since been upgraded to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
