Motorola has taken a swipe at Apple after releasing its red version of its iPhone 7. The Lenovo-owned brand has taken to the Chinese social media site Weibo to point out the similarity of the Apple product with different red versions of its flagship products Moto X and Moto Z. A translation of the Lenovo post on Weibo reads “Someone imitates my face, and someone imitates my products but you cannot imitate my taste!”. A photograph containing red versions of Motorola flagships through the years has also been posted. These phones include the Moto X from 2013 to 2015 and the Moto Z released last year. Users can also share the Weibo post to win a Power Pack Micro power bank from Lenovo.
Apple, Motorola’s biggest rival, has released a red version of its flagship as part of its partnership with (RED). The company announced this special edition on March 21 and will be available worldwide on March 24. Every PRODUCT(RED) iPhone purchase will result in a contribution to the PRODUCT(RED) projects. The PRODUCT(RED) projects will directly contribute to The Global Fund. The Global Fund is a public-private partnership which finances programs to help eradicate HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa. Sub-Saharan countries have some of the highest instances of HIV/AIDS. Some of the project recipients are from countries of Ghana, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia. The Global Fund projects have a special focus on women and children.
Motorola, even before its Google subsidiary days, has partnered with the same organization, (RED), for The Global Fund. A special RED MOTORAZR was released in 2006 which also aims to contribute to The Global Fund. Special PRODUCT(RED) editions of SLVR and KRZR were also released. Recently, red versions of Moto X can be obtained through the Moto Maker website. The Moto Maker website allows potential buyers to customize their own Moto X units. Moto Z owners can also get a red Style Shell if owners also want a red phone. The Style Shell is a set of removable back covers for Moto Z that makes use of the modular design of the phones. The Style Shell are available in different colors.
