The upcoming Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will use Sony’s IMX333 camera sensor on its rear side, one industry insider claims, adding that the camera module of both devices will be a 12.2-megapixel one. The sensor model in question hasn’t been introduced by Sony yet and none of the existing or known upcoming handsets sport this particular sensor so it’s currently unclear what kind of features it might be boasting. Numerous recent reports and leaks indicate that the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will have a 12-megapixel single-lens rear camera, adding that the smartphones might also be able to shoot slow motion videos at 1,000 frames per second, but no other solid details regarding the imaging capabilities of either device have been uncovered so far.
According to earlier reports, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus might be the last flagship duo with a single-lens rear camera setup Samsung releases in the foreseeable future, and regardless of the exact hardware they’ll be sporting, consumers can expect a premium imaging experience. As for other features, the Galaxy S8 is said to sport a 5.8-inch display panel while its larger counterpart will likely boast a 6.2-inch one. Both handsets are said to ship with the Exynos 8895 or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip (SoC) depending on the region, as well as 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space at minimum. The smartphones will sport an iris scanner and run Android Nougat out of the box alongside Samsung’s proprietary user interface. Finally, the company previously confirmed its upcoming phones will feature Bixby, its latest artificial intelligence (AI) assistant developed by Viv Labs, an AI startup acquired by Samsung in late 2016.
Regardless of whether the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will sport the IMX333 camera sensor or not, more details on their imaging and other capabilities are bound to follow soon seeing how Samsung is scheduled to officially unveil them tomorrow, March 29. The company will hold a so-called “Unpacked” event in New York City where its mobile chief DJ Koh is set to officially detail both devices and reveal information regarding their availability and pricing.
