Samsung has released quite a few smartphones with fingerprint scanners thus far, but if a new rumor is to be believed, the company might ditch fingerprint scanners altogether. According to a rumor which comes from Weibo (Chinese social network), Samsung will stop using fingerprint scanners in their smartphones. The source claims that this info came from Samsung’s employee, though there’s no way for us to be sure, of course.
The Galaxy S5 was the first Samsung-branded smartphone to ship with a fingerprint scanner, and these days, even the company’s low-to-mid-range smartphones ship with fingerprint scanners. Fingerprint scanners are quite common on smartphones in 2017 (generally speaking), and Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus flagships will also sport fingerprint scanners, though this time around, such sensor will be placed on the back of the device. That being said, a recent rumor reported that Samsung is bringing facial recognition tech to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus as well, and in addition to the iris scanner, you should have plenty of options when it comes to security. Well, if this new rumor is to be believed, facial recognition technology might actually replace fingerprint scanners moving forward, at least in Samsung’s case, which is quite interesting.
If this rumor is accurate, we presume that Samsung plans to ditch fingerprint scanner either this year, or in early 2018, and that might even depend on how well the facial recognition technology works. Similar tech usually has issues in low light environments, so it will be interesting to see how will Samsung’s facial recognition technology work in such environments, and if the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus do come with such tech, we’ll be able to test that really soon. The two devices will be announced on March 29 during the company’s Unpacked event, and the two devices will be made out of metal and glass, not to mention that they’ll sport really thin bezels. These two phones will ship with Android Nougat, and curved QHD Super AMOLED display. The ‘Plus’ variant will be larger than the regular Galaxy S8 model, as the two phones are expected to sport 6.2-inch and 5.8-inch displays.
