One of the big new features of Samsung’s newly announced smartphones, is the fact that you can dock it and use it as an actual desktop computer, thanks to Samsung DeX. This is another accessory that you can purchase for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. Samsung recently put this accessory up on their website for pre-order, along with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, and it’ll set you back about $149. It’s slated to begin shipping in late-April, which coincides with the official launch date of the two smartphones.
The Samsung DeX Station gives you a place to dock your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus, and it has a few ports along the backside. This includes a HDMI port, a USB-C port, ethernet and two USB-A ports. Allowing you to use it like a regular computer. All you need to do is plug in a mouse, keyboard and a monitor to do so. Samsung doesn’t just make the UI fit on the larger screen of a monitor, but they have optimized Android on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus to be a bit more functional and user-friendly on Samsung DeX. It actually looks and works a lot more like Windows 10 would on a desktop. And the fact that you can just slide your smartphone into the dock to get the desktop experience is definitely a big plus.
Samsung DeX is a bit pricey, coming in at $149, and most people likely won’t be buying one, or at least not right off of the bat. But it is a pretty unique accessory for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. If you are interested in either device, you can pre-order them right now from B&H Photo, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon, and they will be launching on April 21st. Those that pre-order the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus will get a free Gear VR, which also comes with an Oculus content pack, that includes plenty of games and videos to enjoy on the Gear VR. While it would have been nice for the Samsung DeX Station to be one of the freebies for pre-orderers, it is available from Samsung’s website, and likely will land at other retailers once it is launched officially.
