Samsung’s U Flex wireless headphones for the Galaxy S8 have received their Bluetooth certification from Bluetooth SIG, as evidenced by their Thursday listing on the standards body’s website. The upcoming headset has yet to be officially announced by Samsung, though the South Korean tech giant recently applied to trademark the U Flex brand in the European Union, indicating that the product will be hitting the market in the near future. The headphones will likely feature Bluetooth 5.0 support seeing how the Galaxy S8 is expected to become the first commercially available smartphone that supports that standard. While the U Flex headset will likely work with a number of devices, its Bluetooth certificate suggests it’s been designed for the Galaxy S8. Bluetooth SIG revealed that Samsung’s upcoming pair of wireless headphones bears the model number EO-BG950, which is extremely similar to SM-G950 that’s said to be the model number of the company’s next Android-powered flagship.
Initial rumors suggested that the U Flex will launch as a new addition to Samsung’s Level family of audio devices, but the newly listed certificate doesn’t mention any Level branding, meaning that it’s possible the company is planning to release the headset as a standalone product or possibly even start an entirely new lineup with it. In any case, the U Flex headphones have likely been developed in collaboration with AKG, a Vienna, Austria-based audio company that’s involved in the development of the Galaxy S8, as Samsung already revealed at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC). The Seoul-based tech giant probably didn’t choose to collaborate with AKG by chance seeing how the Austrian firm is a subsidiary of Harman International Industries, a Stamford-based tech company that Samsung is currently in the process of acquiring for $8 billion, making it its largest foreign acquisition ever.
If the U Flex headphones are truly intended to ship with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, more information on the product will likely be available shortly seeing how Samsung already confirmed it will unveil its next high-end smartphone on March 29. According to recent rumors, both variants of the Galaxy S8 will launch in the second half of April.
