Android Pay users will soon have a new place to use their favorite payment app quickly and securely; within the Etsy app. Users who have Android Pay installed will find the payment platform as a checkout option when using the Etsy app, and as long as they have a participating card on file with Android Pay, they will be able to use it. Cards used this way do not have to be manually entered and re-verified each purchase, and have the same benefits as cards used directly within the Etsy app. Sellers who already accept Direct Checkout payments will have Android Pay available for their customers automatically, while other sellers will have to implement the new payment method manually. The change is already effective for some users, and will be rolling out to all users of the Etsy app in the US and UK over the next few weeks.
The change does not affect users who browse Etsy through their mobile device’s browser; integration with Android Pay is built into the Etsy app, which means that other ways of accessing the site will not allow you to use Google’s payment processing service. All of the same cards that support Android Pay can be used with the Etsy app, and users who want to use Android Pay for their Etsy purchase (so long as the option is available), need only choose to do so at checkout. If the option is not showing as available, then you’re either buying from a seller who does not support Android Pay, or the feature simply hasn’t rolled out to you just yet.
Etsy is far from the only app to get Android Pay as a payment method. The popular payment service has seen integration into big name apps like airbnb, GrubHub, Jack Threads, and Newegg. Physical stores are leading the charge, with places like Gamestop, Subway, Duane Reade, and the Disney Store helping to popularize the service and drive it toward ubiquity. While the list of physical and digital storefronts that allow Android users to forego entering their information or swiping a card is sizeable, it’s far from all-inclusive, and is still growing by the day.
