The issue causing reddish displays on some units of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will be fixed via a software update tomorrow, Business Korea reports, citing a preliminary analysis of the matter conducted by Consumer Reports, an online outlet ran by New York-based nonprofit Consumers Union. The analysis reportedly encompassed eight random units of Samsung’s latest flagships, four of which featured displays that were somewhat redder than their counterparts, though the difference is hardly noticeable unless the two models are compared side by side. Apart from consumers being able to manually adjust the color balance on the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, the South Korean phone maker will also be issuing a fix that should automatically calibrate the color balance to eliminate any overly red hues depicted by the display, the report states.
Due to Consumer Reports’ preliminary findings, it’s unclear whether the average new owner of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus would even be able to notice that the screen of their device is slightly warmer than the displays of some other models are. Samsung previously insisted that the phenomenon isn’t a hardware defect and said that red displays on some of its smartphones are likely caused by different color balance settings. Regardless, the company recently announced a software update that’s supposed to eliminate the issue, though it has yet to officially confirm whether the upcoming over-the-air (OTA) package will start rolling out on Tuesday like the aforementioned source claims. If the update doesn’t resolve the matter, Samsung even promised to replace all units of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus with overly red displays free of charge, though that offer has so far only been confirmed for South Korea.
The latest additions to the Galaxy S flagship lineup officially launched worldwide last Friday, following months of anticipation. Minor display issues aside, both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus have been well-received by both critics and consumers, many of whom have praised their unique-looking design and software. An update on the commercial performance of Samsung’s new Android smartphones is expected to follow soon.
