Instagram has just announced a new feature called Collections which allows users to create just that. It’s fair to say that Instagram has gone through a major overhaul over the past year. From the introduction of a new logo and colorless app design to the introduction a new feed algorithm and Instagram Stories, the social network has been doing pretty well for itself. One of the most recent features the company introduced was the ability to save posts and, according to Instagram, the feature has been pretty successful with over 46% of all users saving at least one post. Today, though, it appears the company is taking the new feature one step further with the ability to sort these saved images into neatly organized collections.
There are a number of ways to create a collection. The first is by creating one out of already saved pictures. When the bookmarked images page is open, by clicking on the plus icon in the top corner users will be able to select any images they wish and group them into a collection which can be given a unique name. The other option is by simply tapping and holding the bookmark icon on an image. From here users are free to put it into an existing collection or create an entirely new one from scratch. For now, Instagram has said that Collections will remain private to each user, though if history is anything to go by, it may not be too long before the company takes a swipe at the competition.
Pinterest’s whole social network is basically centered around the ability to share collections so if Instagram decided to make collections shareable in the future it would surely be a significant blow to Pinterest. After all, the ability to share these would not only interest users but also business accounts wishing to share their latest seasonal designs or fitness-focuses products for example. Any further additions to these features will likely depend on their popularity, though. With Instagram’s popularity constantly growing, as well as the fact that their Snapchat-like feature Stories is now more popular than the original, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the new collection feature take off just as quickly. Nonetheless, for those interested in the feature, it is rolling out now and is available on both Android and iOS with the version 10.16 update.
