Lenovo’s Moto Z2 Play has just surfaced in a leaked press render image which shows most of the phone’s design. While the phone can’t be seen from all angles in this single image, what can be seen is a familiar design to the old Moto Z Play albeit with a few refinements and touch ups to the style. For example, one big benefit when it comes to change is the use of the new fingerprint sensor. It’s still placed on the front, but Lenovo has gone with the larger and more rounded option that can be found on the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus, which should make the sensor easier to hit and in turn make it easier for the sensor to recognize your fingerprint, as the older square-shaped sensor was small and has had trouble with authentication.
While this particular detail has been changed, there are still quite a few elements to the design that have stayed the same between the original Moto Z Play and the Moto Z2 Play, like the placement of the volume and power buttons, as well as the rear-facing camera bump on the back. Both of these factors haven’t changed at all. In fact, most of the device looks similar to the last model.
There’s still a front-facing flash to the left of the phone’s earpiece while the ambient light sensor and the front-facing camera sit to the right of it, and even the contact plate for where you attach the Moto Mods is in the same spot, although the tiny gold bar that runs along the bottom edge of this contact seems to have been separated from the connector pins altogether with the new model, and it looks like the Moto branding will no longer be imprinted on the back camera sensor module like with the first version of the device. It’s also possible that this could simply be lacking the branding because the phone hasn’t officially been announced. While this is the first time that any information about the Moto Z2 Play has surfaced, the name for the device family, Moto Z2, was rumored earlier this month when a leaked image of the device name branding showed up online. This is in addition to the leaked device name branding for the Moto Z2 Force which is said won’t be exclusive to Verizon this time around, and a leaked image of the Moto Z2 which shows the device with dual rear cameras. If the standard Moto Z2 ends up with dual cameras as the leaked image suggests, then this is one way it and the Moto Z2 Play will differ as the Moto Z2 Play only has one sensor.
